J.R.R Tolkien

He was an English writer, poet, philologist, and university professor. It brought to life the most beloved fantasy stories of all time, such as The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, creating several fictional languages and a very complex imaginary world. Unfortunately, we couldn't find photos of Tolkien on the typewriter, so we made one. The typewriter in the photo is a Hammond Varitype model, on which Tolkien is known to have written part of The Hobbit.

Jack London

Born John Griffith Chaney, was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction. "If typewriters hadn't been invented by the time I began to write," London reportedly once said, "I doubt if the world would ever have heard of Jack London. No one would have had the patience to read more than a page of my longhand!" In the photo, his wife is transcribing his work on a Remington standard no. 7.

Known as "Satchmo", he was an American trumpeter, songwriter, vocalist, and actor. He remained in history as one of the most important singers of jazz music. He typed every time after concerts. Not only that, but he often typed until morning. Armstrong's typewriter was a Remington Portable 5.

Georg Henrik von Wright

He was a Finnish philosopher who succeeded Ludwig Wittgenstein as a professor at Cambridge University in 1948. He is known to have used the typewriter often to transcribe his work and to correspond with publishers and editors for publishing his books. He also used the typewriter to transcribe part of Wittgenstein works. In the photo, he was using a Corona Folding typewriter.

Born Heinrich Karl Bukowski, he was an American poet, short story writer and novelist of German origin. To write his works from his youth, he used the Underwood Rhythm Touch typewriter. Later he would use other typewriters such as the Olympia SG-1 or the IBM Personal Selectric.

She was an English writer of novels, detective plays, and short stories. She was considered the best-selling writer of all time, along with William Shakespeare. Furthermore, she has published 80 novels and short stories and 19 plays, translated into over 70 languages. The typewriter that accompanies her in this photo is a Remington 2.

Born Robert Allen Zimmerman, he is an American singer, songwriter, musician and poet. He has made numerous contributions to American music. On many occasions it was photographed using several typewriter models including Olivetti Lexikon 80 and Olympia SG-1. The typewriter in the photo is a Royal Safari.

He was an Afro-American writer, essayist, poet, and activist, who spent most of his life in France and some in Turkey and Switzerland. He is said to have been inclined to borrow typewriters to write his works. The typewriter with which he appears in the photo is an Olympia SM7.

Woody Allen 

He is an American film director, writer, actor, and comedian whose career spans more than six decades. In his youth, he bought a typewriter, asking the seller if the typewriter would last over time. The salesman told him that the typewriter would last longer than his own life. And here it is in this photo, next to the same Olympia SM3 typewriter, "as functional as on the first day" according to the director.

He was an American writer, Russian-born Jew, biochemist and author. Accepted by the vast majority as one of the most important writer of the hard science fiction genre. It is the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens who was a writer, publicist, satirist and, considered by the vast majority, as the greatest American humorist.
